Sri Lanka Showcases Cultural Elegance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

Updated Date: 26th July, 2024

As the world prepares for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Sri Lanka's national squad is prepared to make an impressive debut at the opening ceremony.

The athletes will don a modern take on the traditional Nilame (Prince) and Manike (Princess) outfits, historically worn in the royal court of the 1800s. Designed by the renowned Sri Lankan designer Asanka de Mel under the LOVI Ceylon brand, these outfits are a blend of tradition and contemporary style. Each piece features the lotus flower motif, symbolizing purity of spirit and aligning with the Olympic values of encouraging effort, preserving human dignity, and developing harmony.

The attire includes the five rings of the Olympics, the Lion emblem, and the athlete’s name. The meticulous hand embroidery, incorporating tens of thousands of beads and stitches on fine silks, is a testament to the island’s 2000-year-old tradition of craftsmanship and artistry.

The Sri Lankan team attire has been highlighted as a must-see outfit for the Olympic Opening Ceremony on ESPN's list, which you can find here.

Here's what they had to say:

“The Sri Lankan team will be dressed in silk and other natural materials, featuring designs that honour the country's traditional clothing culture. Hand-made embroidery and beadwork inspired by the attire of the 19th-century royal court will be on display in the ensemble.”

As the athletes parade along the Seine River, the world will witness not just the sporting spirit but also the cultural richness and artistic legacy of nations. The Sri Lankan team's attire, with its intricate designs and symbolic motifs, will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression, telling a story of heritage and pride.
