Team Sri Lanka

Harbin, the northern jewel of China, celebrated Asian Winter Sports culture in grand fashion for a week from February 7 to February 14. With a breathtaking grand opening, showcasing China’s rich culture and legacy, the 9th edition of the Asian Winter Games captivated sports enthusiasts from around the world. The week-long spectacle brought together athletes, fans, and cultures, making it an unforgettable chapter in the world of winter sports, featuring over 1,200 athletes from 34 nations.
Competing on the grand stage of the world’s largest continent, our tiny nation, Sri Lanka, too, took to the snowy tracks, etching its name into the history books. Four athletes—three men and one woman—raced in the cross-country skiing event, taking on the region’s best in pursuit of glory. The Sri Lankan team comprised Sajeev De Silva, Piyumi Piyadarshani, Shehan Muthugala, and Dhanushka Bandara. Piyumi contested in the 5km freestyle women’s cross-country skiing event, while the three men contested in the 10km freestyle men’s cross-country skiing event. The team was supported by Deva Henry, the Chef de Mission, and team manager, Chandana Perera. At the opening ceremony, Sajeev De Silva and Piyumi Piyadarshani had the honor of bearing the Sri Lankan national Flag, embodying the pride of 22 million people. Both Piyumi and Dhanushka Bandara were making their debut appearance at the Asian Winter Games.
Piyumi’s event was scheduled for February 9, while the others were set to compete on February 10. All cross-country skiing events took place at the Yabuli Ski Resort, held under the chilly conditions of Harbin. Piyumi finished her event in 33rd position, with a time of 34:00.8. China’s Biani Jialin won the gold, while fellow countrywomen Dinigeer Yilamujiang and Chi Chunxue secured silver and bronze, respectively. On the 10th, Sajeev De Silva, Shehan Muthugala, and Dhanushka Bandara faced their event with much anticipation. Dhanushka Bandara delivered an impressive performance, finishing in 44th place with a time of 51:15.7. Following him, Shehan Muthugala clocked 1:09:44.6 to secure 45th place, while Sajeev De Silva finished 46th with a time of 1:12:03.4. Japan’s Yamashita Haruki and Uda Takatsugu claimed gold and silver, respectively, while Kazakhstan’s Klimin Olzhas won bronze.
As expected, the hosts led the points table with a considerable lead, with South Korea and Japan following them, respectively, as of the day before the closing ceremony. Sri Lanka’s participation in the competition, while humble, showcased the nation’s growing presence on the international winter sports stage. Each and every Sri Lankan athlete’s representation was a moment of national pride—not just for the athletes, but for every Sri Lankan who supported them.
