PRESS RELEASE: CGA Sri Lanka Announces Team Preparation Grants for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games
Updated Date: 24th December, 2025
Colombo, 24 December 2025 – The Commonwealth Games Association of Sri Lanka (CGA Sri Lanka) has officially announced the allocation of Team Preparation Grants for six priority sports as part of the nation’s structured preparation for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled from 23 July to 2 August 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Glasgow 2026 will feature 10 core sports, with a streamlined and athlete-focused programme designed to enhance competitiveness, sustainability, and high-performance outcomes across the Commonwealth. Following a thorough review and evaluation process, CGA Sri Lanka approved funding for six sports based on formal proposals submitted by their respective National Federations. The selected sports and allocated amounts are as follows:
'
Athletics: £5,250
'
Weightlifting: £5,250
'
Para Sports: £5,250
'
Boxing: £5,250
'
Judo: £2,500
'
Artistic Gymnastics: £2,500
These grants are designated exclusively for elite athletes with proven medal potential and the capacity to achieve high rankings, assessed on the basis of past achievements and current performance indicators. The initiative is aimed at targeted investment to maximise Sri Lanka’s medal prospects at Glasgow 2026.
The funding support is made possible through allocations received by the National Federations from Commonwealth Sport, the international governing body formerly known as the Commonwealth Games Federation. To ensure transparency, accountability, and optimal athlete readiness, CGA Sri Lanka has issued clear guidelines requiring all beneficiary National Federations to submit technical and financial reports in two phases, at the end of March and June 2026. This framework will closely monitor preparation progress in the lead-up to the Games.
The official grant handover took place on 22 December 2025, conducted by Mr. Niluka Karunaratne OLY, Chairman of the Athletes' Commission and member of the Games Committee of CGA Sri Lanka, Mr. Dilshan Mohamed, Chairman of the Marketing and Sponsorship Committee of CGA Sri Lanka, and Mr. Lal Wickrematunge, General Manager of CGA Sri Lanka.
CGA Sri Lanka reaffirms its commitment to athlete-centred preparation, performance excellence, and responsible governance as the nation builds momentum towards a strong showing at Glasgow 2026.
