Team Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka proudly competes in the 9th Asian Winter Games 2025, featuring four athletes competing in cross-country skiing. On Saturday, February 9, Piyumi Priyadarshani took center stage in the women’s freestyle event, making history as the only female athlete representing Team Sri Lanka at Harbin 2025. Making her debut at the Asian Winter Games, Piyumi was not just racing against the clock but also breaking barriers for Sri Lankan athletes on the international winter sports stage.
The women’s 5km freestyle cross-country skiing event featured 33 athletes from over 10 countries, fiercely competing at the Yabuli Ski Resort. The temperature at the time of the competition was expected to be around -12°C. The race commenced at 11:00 AM local time (8:30 AM IST). While the event included strong competitors, particularly from the People’s Republic of China, the hopes of 22 million Sri Lankans rested on Piyumi Priyadarshani as she carried the nation’s pride onto the snow-covered tracks.
As the sole female representative of a nation of 22 million, Piyumi delivered a commendable performance, setting a time of 34:00.8. Though she placed last, her commitment and resilience in representing Sri Lanka at such a prestigious event made the country immensely proud. Adding to her achievements, Piyumi also had the honor of being one of Sri Lanka’s flag bearers at the opening ceremony, a proud moment for all Sri Lankans.
Her participation marks a significant milestone for Sri Lanka. She has inspired future generations of Sri Lankan athletes to pursue winter sports and compete on the global stage. Piyumi Priyadarshani’s journey is not just about rankings but about breaking new ground and paving the way for Sri Lankan athletes in the years to come.
