Olympic Day 2025 Celebrated in Galle Promoting Unity, Culture and Sport

Galle, 27 June 2025 – The spirit of Olympism came alive in the historic city of Galle as the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC Sri Lanka) celebrated Olympic Day on 25 June 2025 with a vibrant and inclusive events that brought together athletes, students, officials, and the wider community.
The celebration began with the symbolic flag-off of the Olympic Day Walk by Mr. Rifdy Fahmy Secretary General of NOC Sri Lanka, marking the official start of the day’s proceedings. Participants from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Olympians, Schoolchildren, representatives from Galle district government organisations, and a wide range of sports stakeholders joined the walk, embodying the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect towards all.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, the Mayor of Galle and the Government Agent of Galle District were present as distinguished guests. Cultural performances were an integral part of the celebration, showcasing the rich heritage of the Southern Province. Three traditional dance performances were staged by talented students from Southland College and Sanghamitta Balika Vidyalaya, Galle, delighting the audience and adding colour to the event.
The event commenced with opening remarks by Mr. Rifdy Fahmy, who emphasised the role of sport in promoting healthy lifestyles and social inclusion. The proceedings concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Samantha Nanayakkara, Chairperson of the Olympic Day 2025 Organising Committee of NOC Sri Lanka.
Olympic Day 2025 in Galle was a powerful reminder of the unifying power of sport and culture, inspiring all participants to embrace the Olympic spirit in their daily lives.
