OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION: Cancellation of the Sri Lankan Leg of the King’s Baton Relay 2026

OFFICIAL NOTIFICATION: Cancellation of the Sri Lankan Leg of the King’s Baton Relay 2026

Updated Date: 11th December, 2025

Colombo, 11 December 2025 – The Commonwealth Games Association of Sri Lanka (CGA Sri Lanka) wishes to formally announce that the Sri Lankan leg of the King’s Baton Relay (KBR) 2026, originally scheduled for 28 November to 3 December 2025, has been cancelled.

This decision was taken following the unprecedented devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwah, which struck Sri Lanka on 27 November 2025, resulting in extensive loss of life, displacement of communities, and widespread damage across the country.

Importantly, this cancellation came after all operational plans, arrangements, and preparations had been fully completed for the Sri Lankan segment of the KBR. However, given the scale of the tragedy, CGA Sri Lanka made the firm decision to redirect all allocated resources, staffing, and funding towards providing immediate assistance to affected communities, including members of the sporting fraternity who were impacted.

As part of this redirection, CGA Sri Lanka mobilized a coordinated relief effort and delivered essential support to those in need in collaboration with national partners. These contributions were channelled through recognised relief agencies to ensure efficient distribution and maximum impact during this critical time.

CGA Sri Lanka also notified Commonwealth Sport of the situation and the decision taken. Commonwealth Sport has fully endorsed and supported the actions of CGA Sri Lanka, acknowledging the priority placed on humanitarian considerations during this period of national distress.

Prior to the cyclone, the CGA had successfully conducted the Baton Design Competition on 25 November 2025 with active participation from state universities. The winning design will be officially unveiled to the media through a separate announcement in due course.

CGA Sri Lanka extends its deepest condolences to all those affected by Cyclone Ditwah and remains committed to supporting national recovery efforts.

While Sri Lanka continues to prepare for its participation in the Commonwealth Games 2026, our primary focus at this time remains the wellbeing, safety, and rebuilding of our communities.
