NOC Sri Lanka Commemorates World Environment Day in Jaffna

Jaffna, 05 June 2026 - In celebration of World Environment Day 2026, participants of the Second Sport Administrators Course 2026, organized by the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC Sri Lanka), took part in a tree planting programme in Jaffna, reinforcing the importance of environmental sustainability within the sporting community.
World Environment Day 2026 is observed under the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” Reflecting this global call to action, the tree planting initiative was organized as part of the Sport Administrators Course to promote environmental responsibility, sustainability, and community engagement while commemorating the hosting of the programme in Jaffna.
The Second Sport Administrators Course 2026, conducted by NOC Sri Lanka under the auspices of the IOC – Olympic Solidarity, is being held from 3 to 6 June 2026 at The Thinnai Hotel, Jaffna, with the participation of 36 sports administrators from the Northern Province. The course aims to equip emerging sports leaders with essential knowledge and skills in sports administration, governance, and management.
The symbolic tree-planting event was attended by Mr. Rifdy Fahmy, General Secretary of NOC Sri Lanka, and Mr. Lal Wickrematunge, General Manager of NOC Sri Lanka, Olympian Niluka Karunaratne, Chairman of the Athletes’ Commission of the NOC Sri Lanka together with course instructors, Group Captain (Retd.). Nalin De Silva, Dr. Rear Admiral (Rtd.) Shemal Fernando, Ms. Anoma Rathnayake, Mr. Sivarajah Gobinath. The programme was supported by the participation of NOC Sri Lanka staff members, the Thinnai Hotel staff, and all course participants.
The initiative highlighted the role that sport and sports leaders can play in supporting sustainable development and environmental conservation. By planting trees, participants demonstrated their commitment to creating a greener future while contributing positively to the local community.
