NOC Sri Lanka Clarifies False News on the Suspension of NOCSL Secretary General

Colombo, Sri Lanka - 13 November 2024 –  The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOCSL) wishes to address recent inaccurate news appeared on some media that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has called for the suspension of the NOCSL Secretary General. NOCSL categorically denies this false information and emphasizes its commitment to transparent and ethical governance.

 

On 5th November 2024, Mr. Jerome Poivey, Associate Director of Institutional and Governance Service, IOC NOC Relations Department, responded to an email from the President of NOCSL, Mr. Suresh Subramaniam, which included the attached report from the NOCSL Ethics Committee.

 

Mr. Poivey mentioned in his email stated, “We understand in particular that your NOC Ethics Committee has reviewed the allegations which have been raised and provided recommendations, which, for unknown reasons, have not yet been considered by your NOC Executive Board.

 

“Consequently, it is now expected that you convene an urgent meeting of your NOC Executive Board to examine the conclusions and recommendations submitted by your NOC Ethics Committee, which cannot be ignored, and take appropriate action without any further delay, in accordance with your NOC Constitution.”

 

At the previous Executive Board meeting held on 1st October 2024, the majority of Board members did not agree with the Ethics Committee’s report, as it had been submitted without conducting any formal inquiry. Hence, the Executive Board requested clarification from the Ethics Committee, which has yet to be received.

 

However, in alignment with the IOC’s guidance, the NOCSL has scheduled an Executive Board meeting on 19th November 2024 to discuss the above as per the NOCSL Constitution and Olympic Charter. Also, the NOCSL is committed to conducting this process transparently, and decisions made during this meeting will be communicated to the media and public in a timely manner.
