NOC SL's performance explains it all

NOC SL's performance explains it all

Updated Date: 13th November, 2023

Recently the National Olympic Committee noticed that there are spurious postings in the circulation in the electronic media on the performance of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka. Nonetheless as an organisation who respects decency, we don't intend indulging in a laundering exercise; but this exercise is merely an exercise to remind the public on what the NOC SL has been engaging in to harness the image and the progress of sports in various fields and the results that are on paper.

The NOC SL Secretary General Maxwell de Silva points out that he and his team has been active evidently in the recent past. The most prominent is the discovering of two of the most prolific female athletes who came to the forefront of the athletic arena. They are Middle distance icon Tharushi Karunaratne the recent gold medalist at the Hangzhou Asian Games and Nethmi Ahimsa the champion Female wrestler who a bagged a bronze medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022. Both these athletes were initially discovered during their teens through the NOC SL/Crysbro Junior Development plan. They were in the development programme from 2019.

Besides, for the past decade Sri Lanka's only medal producing sport was Weightlifting. The NOC SL during that time has been directly helping this federation to sustain its performance base nationally and internationally. Besides there are scores athletes and federations who have benefitted from projects that have been mooted by us.

Generally, the National Olympic Committee's role internationally is to provide support logistically. But we never have forgotten the athlete and federations and our duty by them.  We are well aware that during the past the NOC SL has never palmed whole burden of sending athletes for International competition only to the Sports Ministry.  We always have acted and worked as a team and evidently that has been the truth behind the recent success of the athletes in all spheres of sports activity.
