Team Sri Lanka

Renowned Sri Lankan swimmer Matthew Abeysinghe, OLY, has announced his retirement from the sport. Throughout his remarkable career, Matthew not only brought Sri Lankan swimming to international prominence but also served as a role model for numerous young athletes through his dedication and accomplishments.
As a two-time Olympian, Matthew represented Sri Lanka at the highest level in both Olympic Games. He holds 9 out of the 20 individual National records in the Long Course format. His spectacular performance in local swimming is underscored by his status as a 10-time National Champion.
Matthew's skill and determination led him to compete at global events, making it to the finals at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. Early in his career, he demonstrated his talent by winning a bronze medal at the Asian Youth Games. At the South Asian Games, he set multiple records and became the most accomplished athlete in the history of the games, with an outstanding haul of 14 golds, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze.
His unparalleled dedication to the sport is evident from his 14-year tenure on the Sri Lankan National Team, the longest for any swimmer in the country’s history. During this time, he represented Sri Lanka internationally more than any other swimmer. Matthew made history by becoming the only Sri Lankan swimmer to qualify for the Olympics through an Olympic Qualifying Standard. He was the youngest male swimmer to be selected for the National Team, marking the beginning of an extraordinary journey.
Matthew's final competition on home soil will be the 2024 Long Course Sri Lankan National Swimming Championships. This event marks the conclusion of a significant era for Sri Lankan swimming and provides an opportunity for the swimming community to celebrate and honor his outstanding career.
As he bids farewell to competitive swimming, Matthew Abeysinghe leaves behind a legacy unmatched in Sri Lanka’s sports history. His journey, filled with perseverance and excellence, serves as an inspiration to future generations of athletes. Let's bid a fond farewell to a true legend and celebrate his incredible contributions to Sri Lankan swimming.
