IOC - OS Technical Course for Wrestling Coaches and Referees

Colombo, 17 January 2022 – The Wrestling Federation of Sri Lanka, under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee – Olympic Solidarity and the United World Wrestling organizes a Technical Course for Coaches and Referees.

The Technical Course for Coaches is a level 1 course, which would cover the Introduction to Coaching and Safety, is scheduled to be held from 17th to 21st January 2022 at the Ministry of Sports Indoor Stadium at Reid Avenue, under the guidance of Mr. Mohammed Abdelfattah. Mr. Abdelfattah is a two-time Olympian. He is now the USA Greco-Roman National Coach. Approximately 20 coaches were selected to take part in the level 1 Coaching Course.

The Referee Course is to be held from 19th to 21st January 2022 under the guidance of Mr. Ashok Kumar who is also an Olympian. The Referee course will provide an introduction to refereeing. Sri Lankan 20 referees will be benefited from this course.

Thereafter, following the instructions given by the United World Wrestling, the Federation is to conduct a National Championship on 22nd and 23rd January 2022 at the National Youth Centre at Maharagama with the involvement of the Course participants. The purpose of the Championship is to evaluate and analyze the standard of the coaches and referees after the education programme.

This programme will be an initiative for a long-term development plan of the Wrestling Federation of Sri Lanka. The Federation is also in the process to introduce Greco-Roman sport to Sri Lanka.

The Wrestling Federation of Sri Lanka is grateful to the International Olympic Committee – Olympic Solidarity, United World Wrestling, and the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka for the supports given for the initiation of this project. Moreover, WFSL extends its gratitude to the Ministry of Sports / Department of Sports Development and National Youth Centre, the office bearers and all other well-wishers for their all supports given to the success of the entire programme.

The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC SL) was inaugurated on 8th April 1937 at a meeting of representatives of Athletic, Swimming and Boxing Associations. As resolved on this day, the first meeting of the Ceylon Olympic and Empire Games Association was held on 30th April 1937.
