Denetha loses at Karate, but Lankan bows out gloriously from Hangzhou

Hangzhou, 05 October 2023 – Karateka Denetha Fernando started his journey in Men's Kumite - 67kg today at Linping Sports Centre Stadium, when he competed in the Round of 16 against Malaysian Prem Kumar Selvam. Denetha lost for 0-2 at the end of the bout. His performance brought an end to Team Sri Lanka's journey at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 and Sri Lanka ranked 25th jointly with Macau, China as at today.

 

To top off the end, the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Games was announced at a special press conference earlier tonight and Chinese swimmers Zhang Yufei and Qin Haiyang were jointly awarded the prestigious title. Zhang Yufei won 6 golds at the Hangzhou Games, tying Rikako Ikee’s record of 6 Golds at the Jakarta Palembang Games, where Ikee also won the MVP title, while Qin Haiyang clinched 5 Golds and a Silver.
