The apex body of world sports, the International Olympic Committee has conferred the ‘WOMEN AND SPORT’ Achievement Diploma in recognition of her outstanding contribution to promoting the development and participation of women and girls in Sport to inimitable Caryll Tozer.
Indeed Ms Tozer is multifaceted. A fitness addict, she still does things that a woman twenty years her junior would still not dare. It was just the other they she walked across several countries while in Europe.
While starting at a very tender age, Tozer represented Sri Lanka for athletics, netball, and basketball since her age of sixteen. Yet, it was netball All her sports achievements motivated her to be involved in many social works as a volunteer in supporting girls and young women in sports. She has been a guest speaker in many events and televisions to talk about the need for empowerment of girl children and the importance of parity when brining up girl and boy children. Tozer was a member of the National Sports Council of Sri Lanka in 2015 and supporting women’s netball and tasked with writing a policy document for all sports.
As a role model, Tozer founded ‘Women in Need’ in 1987 with her partners to help abused women and girls with counselling and legal and medical support. Further, she is running a Facebook page named ‘Safe Sri Lanka for Children’ to take a stand against abuse of children and protect them.
The The International Olympic Committee annually confers ‘The IOC Women and Sport Awards’ to promote the advancement of gender quality in sport. The IOC’s aim on this award is to recognise outstanding achievement and contributions made to develop, encourage, and strengthen the participation of women and girls at all levels in the sport world, in order to close the gender gap.
