An opening ceremony to remember: Paris 2024 unfolds gracefully along the river Seine

Updated Date: 27th July, 2024

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games opened with a magnificent ceremony on the Seine River, in a historic and revolutionary move that replaced the usual stadium model with a riverine spectacular for the first time.

About 10,500 athletes from 203 nations paraded along a 6-kilometre route on boats, each representing their national delegation. The river parade travelled along the Seine from the Austerlitz bridge to the Trocadéro. On 26th July at 7:30 p.m. CET, athletes passed iconic sites like Parc Urbain La Concorde, the Grand Palais, and the Iéna Bridge, providing glimpses of official Games venues. And the opening ceremony will be the largest in history, accessible to the public with 80 giant screens and strategically placed speakers throughout Paris.

As the world eagerly awaits the opening ceremony, Sri Lanka made its mark on the global sporting stage. The nation was represented by a contingent of six athletes, eight officials, and a chef-de-mission. Sri Lanka's national flag was proudly carried by Nadeesha Lekamge and Viren Nettasinghe, two of the nation's most promising athletes, as they led the Sri Lankan team into the Olympic arena. Dressed in striking 'Nilame'-inspired attire, sponsored by LOVI Ceylon, the Sri Lankan athletes served as ambassadors for the country's rich cultural heritage.

Paris 2024 will be the first Olympics to achieve gender parity on the field, with an equal number of male and female athletes. Of the 10,500 participants, 5,250 will be men and 5,250 will be women, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Games. Also this year, the Olympics introduced new sports, including surfing in Tahiti, breaking (breakdancing), sport climbing, and skateboarding. These additions reflect the Games' focus on attracting younger audiences and incorporating a wider variety of sports.
