The NOC Sri Lanka's Climate Commitment



Recognizing the critical need for all stakeholders around the globe to help implement the Paris Agreement and to accelerate the transformative change needed to reach greenhouse gas emission neutrality in the second half of the twenty-first century, the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka supports the vision outlined in the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework.

 

With this communication, NOC Sri Lanka expresses its intent to support and implement the principles enshrined in the Sports for Climate Action Framework and committed to working collaboratively with our peers and relevant stakeholders to enhance the climate action agenda in the sports sector and to use sports as a unifying tool to drive climate awareness and action among global citizens. National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka commits to:

 

        ' Set an interim (2030) and long-term emissions reduction target: My organization commits to setting a target of 50% emissions reduction by 2030 as a minimum and a net-zero emissions target by 2040.

        ' Measure 3 & report 4: NOC Sri Lanka commits to consistently measuring and publicly disclosing its annual climate footprint and emissions reductions progress.

        ' Plan for reaching net zero emissions: NOC Sri Lanka organization commits to submitting a concrete plan (within 12 months of joining the Framework) on how it intends to reach interim targets.

        ' Communicate: NOC Sri Lanka will communicate this commitment to its stakeholders and the general public.

 

Participants commit to the following climate action principles 5:


    ' Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility

    ' Reduce overall climate impact

    ' Educate for climate action

    ' Promote sustainable and responsible consumption

    ' Advocate for climate action through communication

 

NOC Sri Lanka's Climate Action Plan: 2023 - 2030

        ' Create and maintain a “climate taskforce” to deliver on the NOC SL climate action plan and align with Strategic Plan

        ' Invest in projects that offset carbon emissions in line with current tree and coral reef plantation projects (*)

        ' Establish an internal price of carbon as a means to keep financing climate projects

        ' Integrate climate in NOC SL Travel Policy (*)

        ' Reduce and optimize travel by air through the reviewed NOC SL Travel Policy (*)

        ' Buy flights with airlines that use Sustainable Aviation Fuel

        ' Switch to electricity from renewable sources in line with current solar power project (*)

        ' Put in place an Energy Saving Policy for NOC SL and tenants

        ' Replace the NOC SL van and motorbike with electric ones

        ' Train NOC SL team on climate and encourage employee-led climate initiatives (*)

        ' Build climate awareness through climate education and a “train the trainer” approach (*)

        ' Raise awareness of the climate challenge among the sports public, athletes and key stakeholders (*)

        ' Adopt a sobriety and circularity approach to operations and events

        ' Build Sustainable Purchasing Guidelines

        ' Prioritize environment-friendly hotels with the support of the NOC SL Sustainable Purchasing Guidelines

        ' Put in place a yearly monitoring of carbon emissions (*)

        ' Refine data on transport and flights to guide action

 (*) In line with NOC Sri Lanka Strategic Plan 5.3, subitems i and ii.

About us

The National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (NOC SL) was inaugurated on 8th April 1937 at a meeting of representatives of Athletic, Swimming and Boxing Associations. As resolved on this day, the first meeting of the Ceylon Olympic and Empire Games Association was held on 30th April 1937.
