CGA Sri Lanka History
The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) became a proud member of the Commonwealth in 1948. Sri Lanka’s journey in the Commonwealth Games family began in 1938 in Sydney, where the nation marked its debut with a remarkable boxing gold medal. Since then, Sri Lanka has maintained an enduring and committed presence at the Games, contributing to the shared spirit of competition and camaraderie within the Commonwealth.
A historic highlight came in the 2006 Melbourne Games, when Chinthana Vidanage secured Sri Lanka’s first gold in weightlifting (Men’s 62kg). This success was followed by further achievements, including a silver medal in weightlifting at the 2014 Glasgow Games, showcasing the country’s continued strength in the sport.
The Commonwealth Games Association of Sri Lanka (CGA Sri Lanka), operating under the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka (established in 1937), is responsible for organising, preparing, and leading the nation’s participation in both the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Youth Games.
As a proud and active member of the Commonwealth Games Federation, CGA Sri Lanka remains committed to fostering athletic excellence, strengthening international friendships, and representing Sri Lanka with dignity and pride on the global stage.
